Old Drawings

I rediscovered a few of my old sketchbooks and found these which I thought were worth posting. Sorry for the faded color, my scanner doesn't pick pencil up well. The first picture was drawn while looking at a painting.

    1. Great drawings! I especially like the last two; did you draw them from scratch? :D Good pose for the dragon and nice wings!

Ah ha! So you have that problem with your scanner as well! In fact, it's not so much a scanner problem as it is a pencil problem; because the graphite in pencils is reflective, it just sends back white or sort of yellowish-black. Hence the reason it looks faded. The key to fixing this is Adobe Photoshop, which I use on all of my drawings to color balance and tweak. All you have to do is make it b&w to get rid of the yellow coloring (you may even be able to do all this in your scanner program) and then make the levels and contrast more intense to pull out the black, getting rid of gray and making white whiter. It's easy and lots of fun, especially if you want to add color or something and don't want to use markers or colored pencils. On my Mac, I press [Apple - L] to pull up the window to enhance the lines, and I suppose on windows you would hit [Ctrl - L] or something similar, or just find it in one of the drop-down menus by , though actually closer to . Then all you have to do it drag the middle slider closer to the black, or moving either of the other sliders, depending on what you want to change.

    2. hmm, that last post was confusing because where I meant to have "File" and "Window" there was nothing. Apparently Google interpreted that text as HTML and hid it. :P Anyway, where it looks like there are two empty space that need words, imagine that the first means "File" and the second, "Window."

  2. Yeah, so I was bored and decided to go ahead and fix the issues with contrast. :) If you feel like using them for this post, you can find them in my web album, here (click on each image and then right click, choosing save image as to download):

  4. James,
No problem! Yeah, I saw something of an updated version for a second there but now it's gone. :)
P.S., not to sound bobnoxious, but perhaps after like the first picture you could put a page break? That way not only does your post get more views because people have to click on it to see all the pictures, but the main page loads faster and people can see more posts at once. :D Just something to consider.

Also, I'll be working on LoH a little bit today if you want to see go over to that Doc and see what's going on and maybe edit something too. :D

  5. Hey, great job, chap! I love the sword, especially--magnifico! It's extremely detailed. Did you get it from a picture or just come up with it in your own head? ;D
The dragon's wings and tail are quite good, too, as well as his whole pose: reminds me of Smaug.
The first looks like art from the Iconoclastic styles: is it of Jesus or one of the saints? ;D

*****! Can't wait to see more!

  6. Thanks Dalu!

I looked through a book of swords before I drew but as I recall I wasn't actually looking at a picture while I drew it. Yes the last one was drawn from an icon. It is Jesus.

    Coyle,
How do you do page break?
    Thanks Again for the Comments!
