Legends of Last Summer

Tales of string and teapots colored orange
Pools of leaves and solid hair-dos
Rusted grates and tiny hammers
Flashing water and lots of bread
Red splotches and gray lawn chairs
Spilled cracked wafers of green potatoes
Bow-ties with eye-balls and Mario, too
Table crumbs and dying flies
College noodles and ringing bells
Five o’clock the thing that tells
Bitter tea and jelly knives
Flaky salt and mirrored face
Crumpled paper and reddened blinds
Tickled stream and dropping plastic
Woolen knitwear and hair spray
Clear handles and sharp spoons
Biking pixels and hot chocolate
Creamy coffee and cotton socks
Prince’s buttons and yummy stuff
Warm chocolate in clay glass
Eight hotdog buns in pickle juice
Swimming pool in green slime
Angry child in red van
Shiny shovel in old garden
Purple flower in empty field
Dark coal in train cars
Sour stumps in tumbling hills
Dragon clouds in toad pies
White water in tin bottles
Red brick in fifth flag
Refracted light in tinted glass
Cannon smoke in misty air
LEGO Sunday in sunny skyes
Furry feet in noodle pies
Eraser dust in 2-D planes
Sour apples in my mouth
Loud sound in black piano
Purple bands in stretchy leather

  1. I adore this poem, Ben! It's one that you read slowly and take time to interpret, but that makes it all the better. Sounds like the story of your summer life with your family, and it's beautiful. :D I love the "Purple flower in an empty field" line for some reason--sounds intriguing and thoughtful. "Angry child in red van" made me chuckle! LOL Oh, the whole thing is just so rich and tranquil, it doesn't need to rhyme! :D

    1. Dalu,
YOU HAVE THE HOBBIT DOOR AS YOUR PICTURE!!! AWESOME! XD Do you perhaps live in Hobbiton?
      Anyway, thanks! :D
That's pretty much what it is actually; the story of my summer, or the legend, if you want to go by the title! I carried a pock book with me everywhere and wrote down anything that seemed to fit the place or just seemed fun to write down. Lots of it had to do with real things, the 'angry child in red van' for instance; I was driving in a red van and one of my siblings was angry about something. There were no furry feet in noodle pies, however; that was more of an insight on what would happen if hobbits were to jump around a dinner table with noodle filled pies on it. :D
Precisely! I thought the fact that the whole first half had "and" in the middle, and the whole second half had "in" in the middle, was enough. :D

    2. Ben,
LOL! How did you guess? I've lived in Hobbiton for several years now, actually. That's Scare walking out of the door there. :P LOL!
That's a fantastic idea about carrying a pocket book about with you! I need to do that! Ha, ha! I thought the angry child must be real. :P Ha! I thought when I read THAT that you meant a dog in a noodle pie (whatever the latter is). :P LOL Are ye gearing up for The Unexpected Journey, then, or was that just a wild notion?
Oh, goodness--I didn't even notice that! *face palm* I don't know why: probably I was too busy enjoying it to think about the meter. :P Yes, certainly t'was enough! ;D

    3. Dalu,
LOL! XD Say "hi" to Gandalf for me if he stops by!
I thought so, too! Of course, it wasn't my idea afterall: I think I read online that writers do that, then I read it in a book, then James Hench said something about that, so I was like "Hey, must be the thing to do!"
LOL, I guess hobbits aren't the only thing with furry feet! XD Kinda forgot that when I write it. Yeah, I actually have no idea what a noodle pie is either. :P :D LOL! I guess it was just a wild notion; I don't believe I was getting readed for that it that point, as there's still like half a year to wait even now. Always good to plan ahead, I guess. :D

    4. Ben,
Oh, don't worry. He's coming this week actually, as I wrote down on my engagement tablet, like this: "Gandalf Tea Wednesday". :P LOL
Well, that's definitely a good idea, especially coming from those sources. I've heard of a lot of poets and authors doing it, so there must be something in it. I would have already done it myself, only I haven't really gone but a few places in my life that I think would be inspiring like that. Maybe they would have been if I'd had my pocket book! :P
Ha! Just something in your head, eh (about the noodle pies)? Sounds like something Scare or I would come up with. :P
Well, I'm gearing up, as ye can tell by my hobbit-y poster and constant annoying chatter about LOTR. :P Of course, I do that anyway, but it's worse now that hobbit fever has taken over. I think I might get a doctor. :P

  2. Yes, great poem, old boy. You really catch the essence of memory: simple images and feelings.

    Carry on!
